Over Stadion Feijenoord (Stadion de Kuip)
Stadion Feijenoord, in de volksmond beter bekend als de Kuip, is natuurlijk het voetbalstadion waarin Feyenoord al haar thuiswedstrijden speelt. Het stadion wordt door het Feyenoordlegioen daarom ook wel eens liefkozend ‘De Voetbaltempel’ genoemd. Er gaat echter nog meer achter de Kuip schuil, wat niet iedereen over Stadion Feijenoord weet. Alle feitjes over het gebouw zelf, de bouw, de inzet voor Feyenoord en andere evenementen, lees je hier. De plannen voor een nieuw stadion in Rotterdam dateren al uit ver voor 1935, maar in dat jaar werd de bouw van het nieuwe stadion gestart. Het gebouw werd ontworpen door Leendert van der Vlugt, in opdracht van Feyenoordvoorzitter en -legende Leen van Zandvliet. Als dank voor deze oud-voorzitter werd het aanliggende plein later omgedoopt tot het Van Zandvlietplein. Meer over de bouw lees je verderop in dit artikel.
In twee jaar werd het stadion gebouwd, om op 27 maart 1937 feestelijk te openen. Architect van der Vlugt overleed helaas in 1936 en heeft zijn eigen meesterwerk dus nooit volledig voltooid kunnen aanschouwen. In 1937 werd ook direct de eerste wedstrijd gespeeld. Deze vond plaats op het 105 bij 68 meter grote veld tussen Feyenoord en Beerschot VAC en resulteerde in een 5-2 overwinning voor Feyenoord. Hoewel het stadion wel eens verder afgeladen is geweest, is de maximumcapaciteit nu vastgesteld op 51117 mensen. Deze mensen worden verdeeld over vier tribunes met de namen Gerard Meijertribune, Willem van Hanegemtribune, Olympiatribune en Maastribune.
De bouw van een Rotterdams icoon
De eerste plannen voor een nieuw Feyenoord stadion werden concreet in 1931. Voorzitter Van Zandvliet schiet wakker uit een droom waarin hij zijn ideaalbeeld voor het stadion zag. Hij krabbelde dit meteen op een vel papier en het idee voor de Kuip was geboren. In maart 1934 stemt een grote meerderheid in de ledenvergadering van Feyenoord in met de plannen. Dezelfde maand nog wordt architect Van der Vlugt uitgenodigd om een eenvoudig en zakelijk stadion te ontwerpen, precies typerend voor Rotterdam. Na verschillende reisjes naar andere stadia en meerdere ontwerptekeningen, wordt de bouw in 1935 met de bouw gestart. In 1936 wordt de Kuip opgeleverd, al is deze dan nog niet klaar voor gebruik. Aan grondige tests onderworpen kan in de Kuip op 27 maart 1937 dan eindelijk de eerste wedstrijd gespeeld worden, die door Feyenoord glansrijk gewonnen wordt.
Eindelijk een blijvende thuisbasis voor Feyenoord Rotterdam
Na een paar jaar van ontwikkelen en bouwen had Feyenoord eindelijk weer een stabiele thuisbasis waarin ze al hun wedstrijden kon spelen. De Kuip werd met grootste plannen bedacht en zou er voor de eeuwigheid moeten blijven staan. Toch bleek dit niet zo vanzelfsprekend. Drie keer is er sprake geweest van het mogelijk verdwijnen van de Kuip. De eerste keer was al direct in 1941, drie jaar na de opening. Vanwege de Wereldoorlog was er vraag naar specifiek hoogwaardig staal, precies dat staal waar de Kuip uit bestond. Voor de Olympische Spelen in 1992 had de gemeente Rotterdam plannen om een Olympisch stadion te laten verrijzen op de plaats waar de Kuip stond. Aan beide voorvallen is de Kuip niet ten prooi gevallen. Toen in de jaren 90 bleek dat het gebouw volledig rot was en vol met erosie zat, leek het er nogmaals op dat de Kuip het veld moest ruimen. Gelukkig is dit plan omgevormd tot een grootschalige renovatie, waarvan de werkzaamheden in 1994 startten.
Het plan om de Kuip te renoveren werden in 1993 gepresenteerd. Het doel was om het stadion niet alleen in te kunnen zetten voor voetbalwedstrijden van voornamelijk Feyenoord, maar er een multifunctioneel geheel van de maken. Deze multifunctionaliteit kwam het rendement van de Kuip ten goede, waardoor er nog meer met het complex gedaan kon gaan worden. Zo verrees het Maasgebouw: een zalenaccomodatie waarin allerlei (zakelijke) activiteiten en bijeenkomsten gehouden kunnen worden. Naast het toevoegen van deze extra zalen werd ook de Kuip zelf aardig opgefrist. Zo werd een hoop staal vervangen, de tribunes overdekt gemaakt en alle voorzieningen voor de horeca en het sanitair werden flink aangepakt. Voor de spelers en overige personeelsleden werden de kleedkamers en andere zaken flink aangepakt. De nieuwe Kuip werd in 1994 door toenmalig prins Willem Alexander geopend voor een wedstrijd tussen Nederland en Tsjechië.
Voetballen in de Kuip
Het bekendst zal Stadion Feijenoord logischerwijs zijn als thuisbasis van de Rotterdamse voetbalclub Feyenoord. Deze club speelt al vanaf de opening al haar thuiswedstrijden in de Kuip en zal dat nog lange tijd blijven doen. De eerste wedstrijd die in het stadion gespeeld werd, werd direct al door de club gewonnen. Toch is Feyenoord bij lange na niet de enige inzet voor de Kuip. Van 1945 tot 1946 speelde er een andere club in de Kuip, namelijk amateurvereniging Xerxes. In 1990 en 1991 vond hetzelfde plaats, toen met SVV. De KNVB vond het toenmalige voetbalveld van SVV niet van een goede kwaliteit, waardoor de wedstrijden van SVV ergens anders gespeeld zouden moeten worden. Hierdoor werd Stadion Feijenoord ook tijdelijk gebruikt als uitvalsbasis voor SVV.
Overige evenementen in de Kuip
Naast voetbal is de Kuip ook in te zetten voor andere activiteiten. Met de grootschalige verbouwing in de jaren ’90 is hier het startsein voor gegeven. Vooral voor de zakelijke evenementen kwam veel ruimte. Met 40 businessunits van elk ook 40 vierkante meter kwam er ruimte genoeg voor elk bedrijf om zijn zakelijke bijeenkomsten op een unieke locatie te houden, namelijk in een echt voetbalstadion. Met de verbouwing van de Kuip is er voor gekozen om de kap van het gebouw niet groter te maken. Zo bleven ook popconcerten mogelijk, die later erg belangrijk voor het stadion gebleken zijn. Met Bob Dylan die het spits afbeet en andere grote namen zoals U2, Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, David Bowie en Prince hebben vele grote namen legendarische concerten in de Kuip uit weten te verkopen. Met de bouw van twee andere grote stadia in Nederland, namelijk de Johan Cruijff ArenA en het GelreDome, is de populariteit van concerten in de Kuip afgenomen ten opzichte van vroeger. Toch worden er zeker nog concerten gegeven in Stadion Feijenoord.
